A drunk driver on the Isle of Wight was caught drink driving while driving his whining friend to Newport.

Jack Hodgson, of Cheverton Shute, Shorwell, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Tuesday, July 23.

The 32-year-old admitted to driving under the influence in Newport on June 16.

Prosecutor Liz Miller said a man was spotted by patrolling police officers driving around Newport city centre, on Furrlongs.

She said officers stopped the vehicle, found a bottle of alcohol near the driver’s seat and the driver, Hodgson, had slurred speech.

The court heard he had a blood alcohol level of 85, while the legal limit is 35.

Michael McGoldrick, defending, said Hodgson had been in Cowes and had a friend with him who kept nagging Hodgson to give him a lift to Newport.

Mr McGoldrick said he had clearly crossed the line, that he had taken the risk and that he regretted what had happened.

He said he was so compliant and cooperative with police that he did not need to be handcuffed.

Hodgson was given a 22-month driving ban and fined £450.

He was ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a £180 surcharge.
