Impact All drivers who tested positive for drugs on the road had their licenses suspended for 24 hours. Further action will be taken based on the results of secondary tests. According to police, similar operations will continue in the future to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians.
A total of four people have been charged with drink driving after 521 random breath tests and 71 random drug tests were carried out during a three-day operation targeting drivers in the state’s west.
Operation Fume ran from Friday 26 July 2024 to Sunday 28 July 2024 and targeted violations of traffic regulations for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol and general traffic regulations in Orange and the surrounding area.
The high-profile operation involved officers from the Traffic and Highway Command, supported by general officers from the local commands.
The operation involved the use of mobile and stationary breathalyzers, random drug testing and proactive patrols at known ‘hotspots’ in the regions.
In total, four people were charged with drink driving, while seven drivers tested positive for drugs. There were a further 27 speeding offences, two unrelated charges, 48 other traffic offences and seven defect reports.
All drivers who tested positive for drugs on the road had their licenses suspended for 24 hours. Once the secondary results are known, further action will be taken against those who are dependent on the result.
Notable incidents,
- On Saturday 27 July 2024 at approximately 20:30, officers from the Traffic and Highway Police conducted a speed check on the Mitchell Highway, Larras Lee. They stopped a white Mazda sedan that was travelling at 165 km/h, while the posted speed limit was 100 km/h.
Police stopped the driver, a 34-year-old woman from Dubbo, and she was given a fine for exceeding the speed limit of more than 45km/h in a Class A motor vehicle.
- At approximately 1.40pm on Sunday (28 July 2024), police were conducting a stationary RBT on Escort Way, Orange, when they stopped a white Holden Cruze for a random breath test. Police administered a breath test, which reportedly returned a positive result.
The provisional driver – a 17-year-old woman – was arrested and taken to the Orange police station, where she underwent a secondary breath test, which reportedly returned a positive reading of 0.123. The woman was charged with driving with a medium PCA and was summoned to appear in the Orange court on Thursday, September 5, 2024. Her driving license was revoked on the spot.
- Police stopped a white Nissan 4WD on Riddell Street, Molong, for a random breath test, at around 10.10pm on Saturday (27 July 2024). Police administered a breath test, which reportedly returned a positive result.
The man was taken to a mobile random breathalyzer where he underwent a secondary breath test, which reportedly returned a positive reading of 0.111. The man was charged with driving with moderate PCA and was issued a notice for future court appearance. He is due to appear in Orange Local Court on Thursday 22nd August 2024. His licence was suspended at the scene.
It is expected that similar operations will continue in the future.
