The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s hockey team earned a split with the visiting Lakehead Thunderwolves at Merlis Belsher Place on Saturday. In the opener, the Huskies jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period, thanks to a pair of goals from Kyra Haugen and singles from Emily Holmes and Emma Sokoloff. The Thunderwolves rallied in the second period with three goals, including two on the power play, but the Huskies held on for a 4-3 victory. Haugen’s performance stood out, as she scored the first two goals of the game and added an assist. Holmes picked up two assists, and Mackenzie Carson made 30 saves for the win. In the second game, the Thunderwolves struck first on a power play goal by Emily Olson, but the Huskies responded quickly with a goal from Hannah Allan. Thunder Bay regained the lead in the second period on a goal from Danielle Smilsky, and extended it to 3-1 in the third period on a goal from Andie Dunn. The Huskies fought back with a power play goal from Haugen and a tying goal from Brooklyn Stevely with just 1:12 remaining in regulation. However, Olson scored the game-winner for the Thunderwolves with just 19 seconds remaining on the clock. Despite the loss, the Huskies showed resilience and determination in the third period. Duluth Huskies Defeat Thunder Bay Border Cats 6-4

– The Duluth Huskies defeated the Thunder Bay Border Cats 6-4 in the series finale at Port Arthur Stadium on Monday afternoon. The Huskies jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning on a grand slam by Brady Sullivan. Myles Standish pitched seven strong innings for the Huskies, allowing two runs on eight hits. Caden Kratz earned the save, striking out two Border Cats in the eighth and ninth innings. The Border Cats put together two runs against Standish in the seventh and eighth innings, but Cole singled in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning. MJ Sweeney then hit a two-run home run to give the Huskies a 6-4 lead. Charlie Dohemann came in for the ninth and pitched a perfect inning to earn the save. The Huskies (8-6) now sit in third place in the Great Plains East Division, two games back of the second-place La Crosse Loggers. Holmes’ goal was assisted by Brown and Emma Walden. The North Stars (1-1-0) got on the board with a goal from Kaitlyn Lowy at 18:23 of the second period. Lowy’s goal was assisted by Taylor Walsh and Brooke Patterson. The Huskies restored their two-goal lead with a goal from Summerset Beach at 11:24 of the third period. Beach’s goal was assisted by Holmes and Waldner. The Huskies outshot the North Stars 30-28. In Saturday’s rematch, the North Stars rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Huskies 3-2 in overtime. The Huskies took a 1-0 lead with a goal from Waldner at 16:43 of the first period. Waldner’s goal was assisted by Holmes and Beach. The Huskies extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal from Jessica Healey at 12:54 of the second period. Healey’s goal was assisted by Waldner and Holmes. The North Stars got on the board with a goal from Patterson at 18:23 of the second period. Patterson’s goal was assisted by Walsh and Lowy. The North Stars tied the game with a goal from Walsh at 1:24 of the third period. Walsh’s goal was assisted by Patterson and Lowy. The North Stars won the game in overtime with a goal from Lowy at 3:24. Lowy’s goal was assisted by Walsh and Patterson. The Huskies outshot the North Stars 34-26. The Huskies will return to action next weekend when they host the Calgary Dinos.
