A young Laois artist, from a well-known Portlaoise family, is launching a new exhibition in Stradbally this week as part of

Laois County Council’s Arts Office and Laois Arthouse in Stradbally are delighted to present an exhibition of Paddy Critchley’s work with participants from the annual summer adult arts programme in 2024.

After four days with Paddy, focusing on life drawing and painting, the group will present an exhibition entitled Staidéar Neamhbheo Still Life at Laois Arthouse. This exhibition opens on Friday 5th July at 6pm.

The program leading up to the exhibition consisted of a four-day course from July 2nd to 5th. During the four days Paddy shared his working methods and experience to help and guide the students. The program focused on drawing and painting from life.

Since graduating from Limerick School of Art and Design in 2021, Paddy has exhibited at The Hunt Museum and Limerick City Gallery of Art and the Dunamaise Arts Centre. Paddy has work in the Limerick City Gallery of Art and the Hunt Museum’s permanent collection. He received the De Veres Art Award for Work of Distinction at the 191st Annual RHA Exhibition for the painting Nature Morte (After Beckett).

The Laois Arts Office describes Paddy’s work and approach.

“His practice is a constant interrogation of his environment. His political ideologies towards his environment shape how he sees the world and influence his practice. Paddy is aware that in an increasingly chaotic world, where money and power rule, he wants to shine a light on the ordinary person and the life he lives and knows. MORE BELOW THE PICTURE

“Paddy seeks to present diverse voices within the social and economic backgrounds of his colleagues and their environments, these take the form of intimate portraits and still lifes reminiscent of the American artist Alice Neel, who has had a substantial influence on Paddy’s practice. Paddy is also a painter and decorator and is interested in the politics of this profession,” the Arts Office said.

Laois Arthouse welcomes anyone who would like to attend the opening of the exhibition, which is open to the public until Friday 26th July.

Paddy will also be in conversation with Jock Nichol about the direction he wants to take the exhibition on Monday 15th July at 7pm. Everyone is welcome to attend and admission is free. Refreshments will be provided. Entry is via the Laois Arthouse entrance on Timahoe Road, Stradbally Co Laois. R32KWX3.
