The World Airline Awards, hosted by Skytrax, are considered the “Oscars of the airline industry”. They include over 200 categories, including the prestigious title of World’s Best Airline, and over 350 airlines are eligible.
Qatar won the top award for best airline in the world, overtaking last year’s winner Singapore Airlines, which had dropped to second place.
But how did Australian airlines perform?
Qantas Airways was the best performing Australian airline, ranking 24th in the top 100 best airlines in the world, up from 17th last year.
Qantas also took home the titles of Best Business Class in Australia/Pacific, Best Premium Economy Class in Australia/Pacific, Cleanest Airline in Australia/Pacific, Best Premium Economy Class Inflight Catering in Australia/Pacific and Best Economy Class Inflight Catering in Australia/Pacific.
Rex Airlines ended up right in the middle of the ranking, at number 50 of the 100 best airlines in the world. Last year, the company was at number 56. Rex also received the title of Best Regional Airline in Australia/Pacific.
The next Australian airline was Virgin Australia, which ranked 54th in the top 100 best airlines in the world, down from 46th last year. Virgin Australia did not win any of the subcategories.
Jetstar was ranked 75th in the World’s 100 Best Airlines list, down from 69th last year. Jetstar did take home the title of Best Low-Cost Airline in Australia/Pacific and came in second for the World’s Best Long-Haul Low-Cost Airlines in 2024.
The awards were announced on June 24 this year at a gala ceremony at the luxurious Fairmont Windsor Park in London. More than 325 guests were in attendance, with a host of CEOs and presidents on hand to accept the awards and proudly wearing airline crew uniforms.
The World Airline Awards were first presented in 1999 and the annual awards are still presented independently and impartially. The awards are based on voluntary customer surveys, with over 100 customer nationalities and 6 languages represented.
