Gardaí in Meath have advised the public to be on their guard against a new postal delivery scam which has targeted a number of homeowners.
Detectives issued a warning earlier today (Friday) following the latest fraud case targeting local consumers.
A number of dubious links were reportedly sent to dozens of mobile phones, stating that the packages had arrived at various warehouses and that the recipients should then click on a link.
The Gardaí posted an image of one of the suspects on the left on its various social media channels and urged the public to treat the receipt with the utmost caution.
This prompted responses from a number of people who said they had received similar links in recent days.
“(I) got one this morning, reported it and blocked the number,” one woman said, while another explained how she “immediately” deleted the correspondence she received.
The warning follows recently published findings that businesses have also fallen victim to sophisticated scammers, with Irish SMEs losing almost €10 million to email fraud last year.
Figures from FraudSmart, the awareness initiative led by the Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI), show that the number of email fraud cases recorded by BPFI rose by almost a quarter last year, while the average loss to a business was around €12,000.
