The Golden Eagles will begin their quest for a repeat championship on September 5.
There was no shortage of athletic talent at the White House this past Monday during the annual NCAA Sports Day, as hundreds of national champion student athletes including one student from Newhall, were honored by Vice President Kamala Harris.
The reigning NCAA Division 2 Women’s Volleyball Champions, the Cal State LA Golden Eagleswere one of over 40 schools to be invited to the President’s Palace to be congratulated for their athletic and academic achievements.
They were led by team captain and Hart High graduate Shelby Grubbswho capped off an amazing career with a strong senior season in which she battled through injury and returned just in time for the playoffs to help the Golden Eagles make their final run.
The Golden Eagles had a historic run this past season, accomplishing feats that had never been done before.
The ladies came into the NCAA playoffs unranked after not making the final American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25, but that didn’t stop them as they would go on an electric run beating six ranked teams to secure the school’s first volleyball national title in the NCAA era which began in 1982. They also became the first team in history to win it all after being unranked heading into the postseason.
Grubbs graduated from Hart in 2019 where she was a standout volleyball recruit. She earned All-CIF Division 3 honors and received All-Foothill League First Team two years in a row. The two-time team MVP also set numerous school records all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
Grubbs would commit to Cal State LA where she would have an incredible freshman season, finishing fourth on the team in blocks with 51 and had 44 kills to go along with it.
During her college career, the former Indian had tremendous success off the court, receiving California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Academic honors three times, CCAA Fall Honor Roll recognition twice, and a D2 Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award in 2022-23 .
Grubbs also earned the CCAA’s Elite 13 Award for academic excellence after carrying the highest grade point average among CCAA Championship student-athletes.
Grubbs was near the top of every statistical category in each of her four seasons for the Golden Eagles and even finished 5th on the team in blocks her senior season after missing significant time due to injury.
She finished her career with 239 kills, 31 aces and 66 digs and ranks 10th all time in school history with 219 block assists and 11th in total blocks with 251.
About 40 student-athletes were on stage to represent their schools during the speeches from Vice President Harris and NCAA Senior Vice President of Championships Lynda Tealer.
Grubbs was picked to be Cal State LA’s representative and was very honored by the opportunity and grateful to be where she is today.
“Getting to talk with people who play the same sport as you, but at different divisions, and all end up at the same place was really cool,” Grubbs said in an official Cal State LA statement. “To know that we have events like this where we can be recognized on this high of a level is crazy.”
Grubbs is continuing her volleyball career in a different way as she has stepped into the role of assistant coach for City Volleyball Club in Burbank, California and for Harvard Westlake Private School.
The Golden Eagles will look to have a repeat of last season as they return to action on Thursday, Sept. 5against Biola University at the Yotes Classic Showcase in San Bernardino, CA.
