Benin Confident Despite Nigeria Draw in AFCON QualifiersBenin Confident Despite Nigeria Draw in AFCON Qualifiers Benin coach Gernot Rohr has expressed confidence in his team’s chances despite being drawn in the same group as Nigeria for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Nigeria, a top-ranked team in Africa, was placed in Pot 1 of the draw, while Benin found themselves in Pot 3. Despite the perceived strength of their opponents, Rohr remains upbeat. “It’s a tough draw because there’s Nigeria again. And we’ve got Rwanda, an opponent we know well and are wary of. And then there’s Libya, who have a good team, it’s going to be a tough journey there,” Rohr said. Rohr, who previously coached Nigeria from 2016 to 2021, relishes the opportunity to face his former side once more. “Another reunion with Nigeria. That will be three more games with them (including the upcoming return leg, which counts towards the 2026 World Cup qualification). It’s a reunion against a very good team. But we’ve gained confidence and we know we can beat them,” he stated. Benin will face Nigeria twice, as well as Rwanda and Libya. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the 2025 AFCON, which will be hosted by Guinea.
