New Delhi (India), July 11 (HBTV): Jawaharlal Nehru University is considering reverting to internal entrance exams for PhD applications, after the University Grants Commission-National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) exam was cancelled due to integrity concerns.

Admission to PhD programmes at Jawaharlal Nehru University this academic year was to be conducted through the now cancelled UGC NET.

The JNU Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) announced in a statement on Thursday that JNU is considering conducting its own entrance examination.

According to the JNUTA, Vice Chancellor Santishree D Pandit took a decision on July 3, 2024, to open the possibility of reviving the old system of JNU, under which its own entrance examination was conducted for PhD students.

The JNUTA said it expects a positive response to the specific query it has raised following the cancellation of the UGC-NET exam of June 2024.

A senior university official confirmed that such considerations are underway.

Over the past year, teachers and students have highlighted the problems with the National Testing Agency-led (NTA) exam. Students and teachers have demanded that the university take back responsibility for conducting the entrance exams.

The NTA had been conducting the exam for a number of years. Candidates seeking admission to PhD programs had to sit for the Computer-Based Test.
