Catholic bishops have called for an end to kidnappings that have taken place in the country following Generation Z protests.

The Kenyan Bishops’ Conference described the action in a statement on Monday as “illegal and criminal”.

The bishops said those who gave unlawful orders should take personal responsibility for them.

“We are a country with laws that dictate how law and order should be maintained. This is illegal and criminal. It must stop. “You have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘You shall not kill, and whoever kills will be guilty of judgment,’” they said.

The bishops deplored the loss of young lives during the aforementioned demonstrations.

They stressed that nothing could justify the killings as the demonstrators were unarmed and protesting during the day.

The bishops condemned those responsible for the murder of the youths and asked the government to ensure that the perpetrators were identified so that they could face the full force of the law.

“As bishops, we warn law enforcement officials to adhere to their code of conduct. No law allows for the unjustified arrest, torture or killing of people,” they said.

“We have seen protests and demonstrations in the past, we are coming out of serious protests now and there is a possibility that there will be protests and demonstrations again in the future.”

The bishops said it is time for Kenya to learn from the past: violence and cruelty do not resolve conflicts or create a peaceful environment.

Instead, they said, police should focus on criminals who take advantage of peaceful demonstrations to cause chaos.

“We are convinced that our police can do their work professionally,” the bishops said.

“We continue to pray for those who have been injured while nursing or who are undergoing therapy because of the traumatic experiences they have endured. We also pray for the affected families and assure them of our moral support.”

The government has acknowledged that at least 25 demonstrators have been killed during the protests, although the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) puts the death toll at 41 and 360 injured.
