In the semifinals, Pontiac faced a formidable challenge in Danville. Despite falling behind early, they rallied to win 8-5, thanks to clutch hitting and timely defense.

The championship game against Rock Island was a tense affair. Pontiac jumped out to an early lead but saw their advantage shrink in the late innings. With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Pontiac’s cleanup hitter, Megan Mathis, stepped up to the plate. The Amerinds’ playoff run was a display of dominance, exemplified by the mere seven runs they allowed in seven games. Elena Krause, the team’s star pitcher, was the cornerstone of this success, throwing 41 shutout innings, including 26 in a row during the championship series. Her exceptional performance, marked by 71 strikeouts, 12 walks, and just 15 hits allowed, proved to be an insurmountable obstacle for opposing teams. “Thank God we had the tough regional and sectional because it prepared us for this,” Krause said, acknowledging the value of facing challenging competition in the lead-up to state.

Overcoming Adversity

As impressive as Pontiac’s dominance in the postseason was, their journey almost ended abruptly in the semifinals. East Peoria rallied to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, threatening to spoil their championship hopes. But the Amerinds showed their resilience, with Tessa Collins’ game-winning run from first base on a fielding error propelling them to the state tournament.

A Return to Familiar Territory

Two years prior, Pontiac had reached the state finals but ultimately came up short. This time, with ten members of that team returning, including several seniors, they were determined to seize their moment. “We came here because we wanted something,” said Maddie Gourley, a senior. “The second year it was new to us. It wasn’t new to any of the seniors or juniors. We knew what the stage felt like.”

Conquering Peoria

Pontiac’s confidence was evident in their performance at the state tournament. They seized early leads against their opponents and played with a swagger that made it clear they believed in their ability to win. “We had a lot of confidence and played our best ball,” said Bailey Masching, another senior. Their dominance culminated in a 10-0 victory over Fenwick in the semifinals and a 6-0 victory over Antioch in the championship game. Pontiac’s first-ever state title was a testament to their hard work, determination, and unwavering belief.

A Record-Breaking Season

In addition to making history as state champions, the softball team also tied a program record for wins with 31 during the title run. “We really haven’t looked at that,” said coach Nicole Hayner. “You always talk about wins and losses, and you’re going to lose some throughout the season, and we know that. Despite the controversy, the Indians’ performance throughout the tournament was undeniable. Their pitching staff allowed only five runs in three games, while their defense committed just four errors. Head coach Tyler Curl expressed his pride in the team’s resilience and determination. “This group of girls never gave up,” he said. “They faced adversity and overcame it every step of the way.” The Class 3A state title is the first in Pontiac’s history, marking a historic moment for the program and the community.
