Popular food delivery services like Zomato and Swiggy are often criticized for their high charges, and recent hikes have only added to the frustration of users. Amid these hikes, a customer took to X to highlight the issue and shared a comparison between prices on the app and those at a local restaurant. The user’s photos showed that the same food items were almost Rs 184 cheaper when ordered directly from Murugan Idli Shop in Chennai, compared to the higher prices on the delivery platform. This significant discrepancy left the user shocked and disappointed.

According to the shared photos, there was a noticeable price difference between ordering via Zomato and directly from the restaurant. Six pieces of Idli cost Rs 198 on Zomato, while the restaurant charged only Rs 132. For 2 Ghee Podi Idlis, Zomato cost them Rs 132, but the restaurant offered them for just Rs 88. The Chettinad Masala Dosa cost Rs 260 on Zomato, compared to Rs 132 at the restaurant. Similarly, Mysore Masala Dosa cost Rs 260 on the app, but Rs 181 at the restaurant. After adding taxes, the total cost on Zomato was Rs 987, while ordering directly from the restaurant came to a total of Rs 803. The user highlighted this difference in a post and wrote, “My uncle ordered food from Murugan Idli Shop. Check out the price difference between Zomato and actual price.”

Shortly after the post circulated online, Zomato responded, “We understand your concern and would like to have this checked.”

A user responded to the post by writing, “Murugan Idli should pay commission to Zomato or whatever platform they use.”

Another said: “Swiggy/Zomato is not an NGO, they need at least 20% profit.”

One individual shared, “I don’t think it’s a big difference for Convenience. If the restaurant has free delivery, you can order from them.”

Another added: “In the name of convenience they are taking almost 25% extra from us and they are also taking another 30% to 50% from the restaurant.”
