Chicopee, MA – Harmony House, a transformative new housing and support center for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), has officially opened its doors with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Wednesday, June 22nd. The long-awaited project came to fruition after years of planning and collaboration between community partners, including the Chicopee Housing Authority, the Chicopee Public Schools, and the Department of Developmental Services. Harmony House provides 12 fully accessible one-bedroom apartments, along with a variety of support services designed to promote independence, dignity, and well-being. “This is a truly historic moment for our community,” said Chicopee Mayor John Vieau. “Harmony House represents a commitment to providing our most vulnerable residents with the opportunity to live full and meaningful lives.” The building features modern amenities such as a commercial kitchen, laundry facilities, and a community room where residents can gather for social events and activities. In 2020, the original home closed to facilitate the move to a newly purchased space, but plans were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The new facility, acquired in 2017, has been renovated into a five-bedroom home with private rooms, bathrooms, a common room, and a terrace for each resident. Harmony House offers meals, laundry services, personal and spiritual care, and companionship to hospice patients in need of a place to stay. Board of Directors President Gina Mazza expressed her excitement at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, emphasizing the organization’s mission to provide a home and shelter for terminally ill individuals.
