Judging desserts may seem like a fun assignment from your editor, but it also comes with pitfalls, especially in this scorching heat.

You won’t even appreciate the colder treats so much, you’ll just inhale them. And then there’s the problem of consuming so much sugar at once, while the moisture evaporates from your body.
Then again, you only live once; as Willy Wonka, the uncrowned king of desserts, once remarked, “A little nonsense now and then is a thing that only the wisest men enjoy.”
Syrup Waffle (Caramel / Strawberry / Maple Syrup), Mr. Waffle (Food Truck E, 3 tickets)
We believe that any waffle with syrup is a good waffle and that Mr. Waffle’s basic offering is fine if you’re a sugar junkie.
That said, Mr. Waffle (first name unknown) probably has a good supply of pre-made waffles in the back of the truck that are going stale, sticky, and dry, and no amount of caramel sauce is going to change that. Remember how you used to shrug and enjoy that age-old chocolate chip cookie at the bottom of the bag? That’s what we’re talking about here.

Hot Gulab Jamun, Khazana (stand 40, 3 tickets)
Every culture has its own version of the fritter, and for India that would be the gulab jamun, a tasty little fried ball of milk, flour, cardamom, and rosewater. It’s one of the most delicious desserts in a culture known for its amazing desserts, and when done right it’s an irresistible treat.
Khazana’s version would be fantastic after dinner at their restaurant, but simmering in a hot cabin at 30 degrees, with the sauce marinating and softening those doughnut-like balls into goo, does the treat an injustice. Eat quickly!
Fried Mars Bar, The Banquet Drinkery (stand 13, 3 tickets)
A desperate second choice for a review after an ice cream had dissolved in my hand, the deep-fried Mars bar was also a cultural reckoning. If my Glaswegian relatives knew I was the first to taste this fairly recent invention outside of its Scottish origins, all hell would break loose.

The bar in question had been freshly baked on the spot for two minutes and then left to cool for another minute to prevent the tongue from burning. It was the sweetest thing I have ever eaten, sticky and slightly crunchy, and the only thing that would have added to the sugar overload was a bottle of Irn Bru. I take no responsibility for your cholesterol of course.
